The Aare Gorge is an exciting and affordable destination for schools, groups and clubs in the Hasli Valley in the Bernese Oberland.
The light and easy hike through the 1.4-km gorge, via secure walkways and fixed natural paths, is the perfect way to see a natural wonder and experience a truly magical place.
There are information boards explaining important points about geology, water power and history.
From the west entrance to the main attractions, the gorge is also easily accessible for group members in wheelchairs.
This is a great destination, whatever the weather, and can easily be combined with other attractions in the Hasli Valley, e.g. Reichenbach Falls. It was here that the famous detective challenged his nemesis Professor Moriarty to a fight – and that violent scuffle ended with a plunge into this very waterfall!
The Aare Gorge is the perfect destination for a school trip or a club outing for children and teenagers of all year groups. Younger children enjoy looking for the family of ‘Tatzelwurm’, a mysterious legendary creature said to be living in the gorge. The children’s play area at the west entrance is a great place for kids to play and parents to relax.
Please see the reduced prices for groups and schools.

At the brilliant children’s play area at the west entrance of the Aare Gorge, children can play, let off some steam and discover new things, while parents get to take a break.
The children’s play area is located right next to the restaurant terrace.
The theme trail leading to the home of the Tatzelwurm family was created after the publication of the picture book “Citronella and Tatzi celebrate a birthday in the Aare Gorge” (“Citronella und Tatzi feiern Geburtstag in der Aareschlucht”) in the summer of 2021.
The trail is suitable for children between the ages of about 4 and 10.
Children arriving by the west entrance are welcomed right away by wooden figures of Citronella and Tatzi at the playground near the entrance. Citronella provides information about the Tatzelwurm family at both the east and west entrances.
Discover the beauty of nature, the gorge’s mystical ambience and the home of the Tatzelwurm family. The five members of the family (the father, the mother and their three children, Titzi, Tetz and Tatzi Tatzelwurm) are all hiding somewhere along the trail through the Aare Gorge.
Each of them has a question for the children, who can record their answers on a card for entry in a contest; the cards are available at the admission desk.
The German-language picture book that inspired the trail and the Citronella and Tatzi friendship book are both available at the admission desk at the west entrance, at bookshops and from www.tatzi.ch.
Welcome to the world of the Tatzelwurm family. Keep your eyes open and have fun on your search!
Duration: approx. 1 - 1.5 h (one way, entire gorge)
Start of the tour: “Aareschlucht Ost” or “Aareschlucht West” entrance (return trip possible on the ZB’s Innertkirchen railway line)
Please note the information regarding strollers in the relevant section.
The books are available at the kiosk at the west entrance to the gorge, “Aareschlucht West”:
“Citronella und Tatzi feiern Geburtstag in der Aareschlucht” by Niels Dunkel and Susanne Schläppi-Dunkel (father and daughter)
“Meine besten Freunde”, a friendship book by Susanne Schläppi-Dunkel.
The Aare Gorge is accessible for smaller and light wheelchairs and narrower pushchairs from the west entrance up to the main attractions in the middle of the gorge.
