Until the Aare Gorge was developed as a tourist destination, there were only three side gorges that were accessible in the ‘Kirchet’ rock formation: the ‘Trockene Lamm’, the ‘Lautere Schlauche’ and the ‘Finstere Schlauche’, through which you could get down to the Aare at around the middle of the gorge. Other than that, the gorge was only accessible via the adventurous water route, which was probably only used very occasionally. It’s no wonder that this mysterious gorge and its inhabitants became the subject of myths and legends.
